This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)-based Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in improving students’ science literacy and learning outcomes on the topic of waves. The study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental design and a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 34 eighth-grade students from Class VIII D at SMP Negeri 1 Sintang, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through tests based on the OECD (2013) science literacy indicators, administered before (pretest) and after (posttest) instruction, as well as through documentation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and N-Gain analysis. The results showed that the students’ average scores increased from 59.59 on the pretest to 81.06 on the posttest. The normality test results indicated that the data were not normally distributed; therefore, hypothesis testing was conducted using the Wilcoxon test. The results of the Wilcoxon test showed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the pre- and post-treatment values. The N-Gain analysis yielded an average value of 0.467, classified as moderate. The improvement in learning outcomes is related to the development of students’ science literacy skills through inquiry activities, data analysis, and problem-solving in the string telephone project, which uses recycled cans and integrates STEM elements. Thus, STEM-based Project-Based Learning (PjBL) is effective in improving students’ science literacy and learning outcomes in the topic of waves.
