Abstract

Environmental literacy is a critical competency in 21st-century education that is necessary for shaping students’ awareness, attitudes, and behaviors regarding environmental sustainability. However, science education in Indonesia still tends to focus on conceptual mastery and thus has not yet been optimal in linking scientific knowledge to environmental and local cultural contexts. Therefore, integrating local wisdom into science education is one alternative for supporting the development of environmental literacy. This study aims to analyze research trends, the forms of local wisdom that have been integrated, and their contributions to environmental literacy in science education. The study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Data were obtained from Google Scholar, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Garuda, and DOAJ using predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 18 articles published between 2019 and 2025 were analyzed using content analysis techniques. The results of the study indicate that research on integrating local wisdom into science education has increased in recent years and is predominantly focused at the junior high and high school levels. The forms of local wisdom identified include traditional environmental knowledge, traditional food processing, local culture and traditions, ecotourism, and community-based conservation practices. The integration of local wisdom has been shown to improve science literacy, conceptual understanding, critical thinking skills, environmental awareness, conservation attitudes, and sustainable behavior. These findings indicate that local wisdom has great potential as a contextual learning resource for supporting the development of environmental literacy in science education.
